Groundbreaking for Shaw Road Elementary a Success
As construction begins to add twelve additional classrooms at Shaw Road Elementary, a groundbreaking ceremony was held to commemorate the work which has already begun. The class-size reduction project is projected to be completed at this time next year - just in time for the 2017-18 school year.

School Board Directors Kathy Yang and Michael Keaton spoke to the crowd of approximately 60 people, including staff, parents, students, community members, and those working on the project.

Superintendent Tim Yeomans also spoke at the groundbreaking. He thanked the school board and the community for their support of students across the district. Yeomans connected directly with the Shaw Road students standing in the front row during the ceremony. Pictures included below show the excitement many have for the addition to their school.

The $8.9 million project, transferred from General Funds to Capital Projects, represents another step in the progress to achieve state objectives for full-day kindergarten and average class size of 17 to 1 for kindergarten through third grades.

The Shaw Road addition will use green building standards. The environmentally friendly design will implement standards that include energy efficiency, daylighting designs, water conservation, sustainable materials use, and more efficient transportation.
The school board approved the local funding allocation for the project at the February 22 meeting. The approval allows the Capital Projects department to move ahead with the project while continuing to request state funds to alleviate some of the cost.

The classroom additions are not intended to address current growth and overcrowding throughout the district. Rather, the additions meet state objectives for reduced class sizes limited to 17 students per classroom in grades K-3.

The state of Washington is moving toward offering full-day kindergarten at every school statewide by 2018. Puyallup, the eighth largest district in the state, implemented full-day kindergarten in the fall of 2014.

The Shaw Road classroom addition will be completed for the 2017-18 school year. Plans are currently underway to accommodate student recess and playground needs while construction is underway. Classrooms will not be disrupted during construction. - See more at: http://www.puyallup.k12.wa.us/cms/One.aspx?portalId=141151&pageId=2168564#sthash.Q378LVnk.dpuf
