Michelle CruckshankDear Trailblazer Families,

Welcome to a new school year!  While we are in the thick of the unpredictability of construction, we are definitely excited to have your children here!   I hope your student has had a great start to 2016-2017 at Shaw Road.  Seeing how the students have grown and hearing all of the tales of summer is so fun.

We have a number of new staff members who are adding their skills and talents to our already amazing team.
Please welcome them:

Kindergarten:  Jill McBroom and Cheryl Kirkele
2nd Grade:  Susan Brown
3rd Grade:  Lisa Elliott
5th Grade:  Michelle Meyers
Learning Assistance Program (LAP):  Julie Jones
Music:  Andrew Berger and Sue Bjelke
Teacher of Visually Impaired:  Dawn Hudnall
Speech:  Julie Carlson
O.T.:  Julie Randall
Counselling:  Alyssa Capocy
Psychologist:  Brandi Whitaker

We have had to make changes to our building schedule and logistics due to construction.  Our team has done a phenomenal job of planning but until the already-enrolled 666(!) Trailblazer students arrive we cannot predict what logistical issues might occur.  Hence, our key words as we start the year are tentative and flexible.  Plans will change if we find that what we have in place is not the very best for student safety.

Following is some important information regarding arrival/recess (in the interest of student safety):

The construction project is taking up our former playground space, limiting the availability of space for students at recess and before school.  Because of this, we have had to change up arrival and recess procedures.   When your students arrive they will be assigned to different locations, depending on grade level:

Kindergarten and 1st Graders: Line up in the Gym
2nd, 3rd, 4th Grades and Mrs. Martin’s class:  bLine up on the blacktop between the portables and the building
5th and 6th:  Line up at classrooms (all portables except Mrs. Martin’s, above)

In the interest of maintaining safety for all students there will not be any space to play before school.  Students will immediately go to their lines when they arrive.  There will also be an adult assigned to the gate on 12th Street, closest to Shaw Road, before and after school.  While our first choice is to have your student ride the school bus, those of you who drop off will want to consider 12th Street.  The parking lot out front is very busy, and a right-turn-only sign has been added to the exit to Shaw Road.

We are running recess in 3 locations:  the field, the NW Christian Playground, and the small Kindergarten playground (Kinder classes only).  We will have extra hands on deck as we start school to see if the plan for moving students from place to place is going to work.  If it doesn’t we will change it.  In addition, as we see what students need for additional equipment at recess we will order it.  I am happy to report that the track is available and our recess runners program will continue!

I will be providing ongoing and frequent School Messenger communication throughout the year.  Feel free to contact me if you have specific questions.  I am honored and excited to be your principal and I take great pride in my work with this remarkable community.  Working together – staff, families and kids - we will make this one of the best and most successful years ever for our Trailblazer students!
